Review : Hoshino Coffee @ Mid Valley

hoshino coffee
Hailing all the way from Japan with outlets in Singapore, South Korea, China and now Malaysia, Hoshino Coffee as its name implies specialises in coffee- hand drip coffee particularly. While that does not appeal to a non-coffee person like me, what drew me to this place was its food. The location of this restaurant is actually in the middle of Gardens and Mid Valley where Tim Ho Wan previously was before it closed down (no surprise there with such a limited menu and crappy taste).

The coffee machine!

This place is not suitable for big groups as you can see from the picture above. Seating is "cubicle style" which accommodates 2 people only. They do have bigger tables but those are very limited in quantity.

hoshino coffee pot baked curry rice with chicken

What's this called : Hoshino Pot-Baked Curry Rice with Chicken

What's in it : Similar to those char-chan-teng cheese baked rice but with added Japanese curry, broccoli, chicken, onsen egg, and sausages.

Chubsquared thoughts : I shall begin by saying that whatever is in the little glass bowl by the side (not sure what the contents are) tasted horrible. Luckily, that does not apply to the main dish. The rice was very soft and drenched in curry which by the way is not spicy at all. Those who prefer spicy curries will not be a fan of this but I loved it as the combination of all the various ingredients was good. The portion is big and suitable for sharing, which is a good idea because the desserts here deserve a definite order.

hoshino coffee omu rice and chicken teriyaki

What's this called : Omu Rice and Chicken Teriyaki with salad

What's in it : Japanese rice wrapped with omelette, with teriyaki chicken and salad by the side.

Chubsquared thoughts : This was average for me. While it did not taste bad, there was also nothing about it that would make me order it again as I could easily get it elsewhere (Pasta Zanmai also has this and for a cheaper price).

hoshino coffee french toast

What's this called : French Toast

What's in it : French toast topped with sugar and cream.

Chubsquared thoughts : Make sure you leave sufficient tummy space for this because this dish should be the reason you are dining at this place! A common dish found usually in Japanese coffee shops but rare in Malaysia, this was SO delicious The texture was perfect : moist and fluffy, with the perfect amount of butter, egg, and cream which you can taste in each bite. Most perfect when paired with the absolutely delicious cream. Needless to say, I would return just for this.

hoshino coffee souffle

What's this called : Pot Baked Souffle

What's in it : Vanilla souffle with custard sauce.

Chubsquared thoughts : Although the texture for this was good, I felt it was nothing really special. But it makes a good dessert to end a meal with. It was also not too sweet which I liked. I would suggest trying the seasonal souffles like the one below instead as they had more flavor.

hoshino coffee chocolate ganache souffle

What's this called : Pancake style Souffle with chocolate ganache and ice cream.

Chubsquared thoughts : So, SO good. The custard souffle above tasted so bland, but with the addition of overflowing chocolate ganache and ice cream, it was a whole new level. I wouldn't hesitate to order this again, but it is available for a limited period only, so I hope they add this to their mainstay menu!

hoshino coffee fruits tea
Our drink : Hot Fruits Tea in pot

Overall Chubsquared-tified : 2/3 Food was good and acceptable. While I would definitely return, there were hits and misses as well.
