Review : Colonial Cafe @ Majestic Hotel KL
One fine Sunday, the plan was to go for chicken rice ball at the Colonial Cafe at Majestic Hotel since we had a craving for it. However, upon setting our eyes on their "Colonial Sampler" menu, that plan went flying right out the window and we settled on having that instead. Why you ask? Apart from the chicken rice ball also being in that menu, everything we have been planning to try at that restaurant was also included! It was a no-brainer decision.
The Colonial Sampler menu |
What's this : Hainanese chicken rice ball
Chubsquared
thoughts : Yup, you only get ONE rice ball. Not complaining though because as can be seen from the menu, there's alot to finish and it would not be a smart move to stuff myself during the first course when there are four more to go before dessert. To those wondering where the chicken is, it is inside the rice ball. I would suggest eating the entire ball together as that's the best way to get all the flavors. And to those saying why not just drive to Malacca to eat this : why drive 150KM when you can get an even better tasting one located less than 10KM away? And let's not forget the ambience : here, nobody will pressure you to leave so they can get your seat/table and you wouldn't even have to break a sweat. Sure, its the experience that counts, I understand. But for me, the taste of this chicken rice ball is second to none and I would not hesitate to return for this.
What's this : Classic prawn cocktail with lettuce and cucumber drizzled with spicy cocktail sauce
Chubsquared
thoughts : This is a cold salad dish. Usually does not appeal to me as I do not consume salads, but I'm game to try a bite of everything. Good thing too, because this was delicious! The prawns were very fresh and tender; there were at least 12 prawns in there so the serving is pretty generous. That "spicy cocktail sauce" is just thousand island but I love thousand island sauce and it went well with the prawns.
What's this : Tomato soup with herb toast
Chubsquared
thoughts : As can be seen from the menu, this was supposed to be Hainanese Boiled Beef Soup but my companions do not consume beef so we requested to change it to something else. Don't have much comment on this but it was nicely cooked and thick like pumpkin soup.
What's this : Hainanese chicken chop with hand-cut fries in onion gravy
Chubsquared
thoughts : This was not the main course but the size was big. When we decided to
try out this set menu we were under the impression the portions would be
small as befits typical fine-dining courses. Until this dish,
everything was true to our impression. But this was so big it made us
worry we would not be able to enjoy our main course which was our
favorite dish. The first bite made us forget our worries- it was so good
we could not stop eating it. And lo and behold it was soon fully
consumed. Good food tends to do wonders to what the stomach can
tolerate.
What's this : Baked honey-glazed cod fish with battered onion rings and buttered asparagus
Chubsquared
thoughts : I apologise for the horrible picture which does not do this dish justice. This is the main course and was really the one dish we were looking forward to try the most. Its size was smaller than the chicken chop but this is understandable since cod fish is considerably more costly than chicken. And fortunately, we were not disappointed. Divine to the point it was gone in record-breaking time, this is a dish not to be missed. The cod was cooked perfectly - seared on the outside and buttery soft on the inside with just the right amount of sweet coating. Onion rings were also perfect with the right balance of batter vs onion.
What's this : English trifle - custard with vanilla infused sponge cake and redcurrant jelly
Chubsquared
thoughts : Finally, dessert time. At this point our tummies were already brimming, but, there's always space for some dessert.
Overall
Chubsquared-tified : 3/3 Food was absolutely fantastic!! Definitely returning and
recommending to everyone!
